Citizen Commons Hosts a YANN Conversation In Owerri

On the 29th of September 2022, Citizen Commons hosted another exciting edition of the #CitizenConversation hosted at our #ImpactSpace @ImpactCentral to discuss the possible ways everyday Nigerians, civil society organizations, activists, legal practitioners, and media and state actors can end the menace of police brutality in Nigeria.
Police brutality is a serious challenge in Nigeria. The Nigerian police force, which has been entrusted with protecting the lives and property of Nigerians has evolved to be a source of threat, and violence and has consistently abused its power. Therefore, there is a need to deepen advocacy around reform of the Nigerian police as well as the creation of awareness to educate victims on the best ways to navigate experiences of brutality when confronted.
In the conversation were discussed the role of CSOs and Everyday Nigerians to ensure the implementation of the Police Act 2020, possible steps and laws citizens should take when they encounter a police officer, and The role of journalists in amplifying the stories of the victims of police brutality, the possible solutions and suggestions to ending the continuous and uncensored brutality of the police on the citizens and many more questions that centered around police reformation, active citizen and good governance.
