Citizens Commons Commemorates International Human Rights Day

Citizen Commons International joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Human Rights Day on December 10 2021.

The event featured a conversation about the roles of CSOs, government offices and private individuals in the fight to end Police Brutality. The Conversation was moderated by Roseline Okoro of Legal Commons , with Amb. Ndubuisi Idejiora-Kalu, DG International Law, Diplomacy & Economy Research Center, Gerald Kachi Okoro, Publicity secretary Committee for Defence of Human Rights. CDHR, Chisom Ihekwaba, National Coordinator, Human Rights Agenda Network, HRAN on the panel.

The conversation established that there are cases of police brutality recorded all over the world, however, in Nigeria, the prevalence of police brutality and inhuman treatment meted on the youths is worrisome. Although different organizations have carried out awareness and training for the police, there is a need to reform the Nigerian police beyond just a change of name.

Successive brutality and crises have had long-lasting and multidimensional impacts on young people and unless their rights are protected, including through decent jobs and social protection, this generation runs the risk of falling prey to the detrimental effects of mounting inequality and poverty.
